‘Protectors need protecting too.’

Hoedspruit, South Africa (14 May 2026) – When one of the Kruger’s working doggies became critically ill overnight, a helicopter was called in, and he was flown to Hoedspruit for urgent care.

“Last week, one of the working dogs from a protected area within the Greater Kruger National Park became critically ill overnight, requiring urgent intervention.” Hope for WIldlife Helicopter Services shares. “The helicopter was called in to airlift the dog back to Hoedspruit, where the veterinary team was already waiting on the helipad so treatment could begin without delay.”

His handler flew with him. In the video (shared below), you’ll see just how much this dog means to the people he works with.

Kruger’s K9 units play an important and vital role in keeping the park’s wildlife safe from poaching. These working dogs are trained to track poachers through all kinds of demanding conditions. They do what no human alone can, covering ground quickly – as working to find poachers is often a race against time – and picking up scents.

In SA’s biggest national park, and one of the best in the world, K9 doggies are true heroes! Our rhinos, elephants, and other vulnerable species are safer because they’re out there every day, diligently doing what they were trained to do!

“These incredible dogs play such an important role in conservation and counter-poaching efforts, and moments like these are a powerful reminder of just how valuable they are.”

It’s heartwarming to see the level of urgency and care provided for the dogs that work alongside their teams to help protect wildlife. The story was shared by Hope for Wildlife Helicopter Services, which provides professional helicopter services for wildlife conservation and eco-tourism.

“A big thank you to Dr Debbie English and the team at ProVet Animal Hospital for the care they give these working dogs — absolute legends in the industry” Hope for Wildlife shared. “Because every life dedicated to protecting the wild matters.”
