9 African countries advance to round of 32 | 2026 FIFA World Cup

Nine of the ten African countries at the on-going FIFA World Cup qualified for the round of 32 stage.

Morocco, Senegal, Cabe Verde, Algeria, Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Ghana, Egypt, Ivory Coast and South Africa all made it to the first knock out stage of the tournament.

Only Tunisia failed to progress from the group stage.

South Africa qualified in second place with four points as Mexico led group A.

Morocco was second in Group B with 7 points, same as group leaders Brazil who had a superior goal difference.

Ivory Coast came number two in Group E, on same number of points (6) as Germany who had a better goal difference.

Egypt finished second in Group G behind leaders Belgium (both had 5 points).

With three draws, Cabo Verde qualified in second place from Group H, behind winners Spain.

Senegal was third in Group I with three points, finishing among the eight third placed countries.

Algeria finished in position three in Group J with four points, coming strongly among the third placed countries, same as DR Congo and Ghana in Group K and L respectively.

South Africa celebrations after qualifying for the round of 32

Round of 32 match ups:

South Africa takes on Canada in Inglewood on 28th June 2026.

Netherlands will play Morocco on 29th June in Guadalupe.

Belgium faces Senegal on 1st July 2026 in Seattle. Ivory Coast will tussle against Norway on 30th June in Arlington.

DR Congo will battle England on 1st July 2026. Australia locks horns against Egypt in Arlington on 3rd July 2026.

Algeria plays Switzerland on 2nd July in Vancouver and Ghana Black Stars will face Colombia on 3rd July 2026 in Kansas city.

In the history of the FIFA World Cup since 1930, this is the first tournament to be co-hosted by three countries; Mexico, Canada and the United States of America (USA).
