By the late 1970s, Jacob “Killer” Miller had firmly established himself as one of reggae’s most compelling voices. While his work with Inner Circle was gaining international attention, his solo recordings showed another side of his remarkable talent. Released in 1978 on the Top Ranking label, the Tommy Cowan-produced Healing Of The Nation stands as one of the finest examples of Miller’s roots output, combining a powerful message with first-class musicianship.
The title says it all. Healing Of The Nation reflects the mood of an era when Jamaica was struggling with political violence and social division. At the same time, the song draws on Rastafarian beliefs, where the phrase “healing of the nation” is closely associated with the sacramental use of herb as a source of spiritual and physical healing. Miller had already touched on the subject in earlier recordings such as Tired Fe Lick Weed In A Bush, but this performance takes a more serious path. His vocal is filled with emotion and conviction, carrying every line with the kind of authority that made him one of the great roots singers of his generation.
The backing matches the strength of the vocal. The Fatman Riddim Section delivers a deep, rolling roots riddim, driven by a solid bassline and crisp drumming that leave plenty of room for Miller’s expressive delivery. It’s the kind of production that immediately places the listener in the late’70s, when heavyweight riddims and meaningful lyrics went hand in hand.
The flip side offers the equally rewarding Healing Dub, most likely done by Sylvan Morris. Following the tradition of Jamaican sound system releases, the vocals are largely stripped away, allowing the riddim to take centre stage. The bass, drums and subtle studio effects reveal just how well-crafted the recording really is, making Healing Dub much more than a simple accompaniment.
Jacob Miller’s untimely death in 1980 robbed reggae of one of its brightest talents, but recordings like Healing Of The Nation continue to speak for themselves. More than four decades after its release, this outstanding 7″ single remains an essential roots reggae selection, capturing an artist at the height of his powers and delivering a message that has lost none of its relevance.
