  • Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Niger, Ethiopia, and Gabon recorded slight declines in petrol prices this month.
  • The global average petrol price rose from $1.53 to $1.59 per liter.
  • Nigeria’s petrol price increased compared with last month.

A recent deal in Namibia offers insight into how governments should react to energy prices that constitute an economic issue.

The Southern African country recently selected TotalEnergies to supply its bulk petrol and diesel needs from November 2026 to January 2027 after a competitive tender.

The winning bid offered a 71 Namibian cents per litre discount on petrol, with the government expecting total savings of about N$220.5 million across the three-month contract.

The savings are expected to strengthen Namibia's National Energy Fund and help the government keep pump prices stable for consumers.

That matters because fuel prices have a direct effect on almost every part of an African economy.

The World Bank estimates that 80% to 90% of goods in Africa move by road, while transport costs can account for as much as 45% of the retail price of basic food staples.

Cheaper petrol can therefore lower the cost of moving food, workers, raw materials and finished products. For households, lower transport expenses can leave more income available for food, housing and other spending.

With that said, here are the 10 African countries with the lowest fuel prices in September 2026 according to data from GlobalPetrolPrices.

Compared to last month’s list, when the global average price of petrol was 1.53 U.S. dollars per liter, as opposed to 1.59 U.S. dollars per liter this month, fuel prices for Algeria, Egypt, Tunisia, Niger, Ethiopia, and Gabon decreased slightly.

Fuel prices in Nigeria increased.

Libya, Sudan, and Angola retained the same fuel prices this month as last month.
