Maputo (MOZTIMES) - Transport operators in Mozambique have increased the fares charged for long distance bus routes by up to 40 per cent – although these increases have not been approved by the government and so are illegal.
The price of a bus ticket from Maputo to the northern city of Nampula has risen from 4,500 to 6,000 meticais (from 70 to 93 US dollars, at the current exchange rate), a rise of a third. The fare from Maputo to the central city of Beira rises by 40 per cent, from 2,500 to 3,500 meticais.
