Undertaker remanded for attempted murder in Jane Usher Boulevard shooting

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Belize City undertaker has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison after being charged in connection with a shooting that occurred over a month ago in the Jane Usher Boulevard area.

Oscar Ervin Gonguez, 22, of Curl Thompson Street, appeared in Court #1 on Monday afternoon, where he was read three indictable offenses: attempted murder, dangerous harm, and use of deadly means of harm upon 20-year-old Alonzo Nigel Myers.

Due to the nature of the offenses, bail was denied and Gonguez was remanded to the Belize Central Prison until September 24, 2026.

The shooting occurred around 10:50 p.m. on Friday, May 22, 2026, on Mudd Street. Police say Myers, a labourer of Mudd Street, was heading home and was closing his gate when two tall, slim-built men ran toward him and fired several shots in his direction.

Myers was injured and rushed to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital, where police later found him suffering from apparent gunshot injuries. He was reportedly listed in critical condition at the time.

Police say that during the investigation, Myers gave a statement and identified one of his attackers as Gonguez. The second attacker remains at large.

Gonguez was later detained by police, informed of the report made against him, and formally arrested and charged for attempted murder.
