The United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in The Gambia is supporting a training programme for members of the National Youth Parliament aimed at strengthening young people’s understanding of access to information, public accountability and civic participation.
The training is designed to equip young leaders with practical knowledge of The Gambia’s Access to Information framework and how credible public information can be used to represent their peers, engage decision-makers, raise community concerns and promote transparency and accountability.
According to UNDP The Gambia, young people have an important role to play in shaping the country’s development and strengthening accountable governance. More than four in ten Gambians are between the ages of 15 and 35, making meaningful youth participation an important component of national development.
The initiative also supports The Gambia’s National Action Plan on Youth, Peace and Security 2025–2030, which recognises young people as partners and co-leaders in peacebuilding and promotes their meaningful participation in public life.
The training is being conducted under the Strengthening Citizen Trust and Public Accountability for Peaceful Coexistence in The Gambia Project.
The project is funded by the United Nations Secretary-General’s Peacebuilding Fund and jointly implemented by UNDP, UNFPA The Gambia and the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights, OHCHR.
The programme also contributes to Sustainable Development Goal 16, which focuses on peace, justice and strong institutions, including public access to information and the development of responsive, inclusive and accountable institutions.
UNDP said providing young people with access to credible information and meaningful opportunities to participate in public affairs can strengthen their ability to advocate for their communities and help build trust between citizens and public institutions.
