By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): The Ministry of Foreign Affairs is reportedly working to verify the facts surrounding an incident said to involve Belize’s Permanent Representative to the International Civil Aviation Organization, Kennedy Carrillo, in Montreal, Canada.

The matter was first reported by Love News, which stated that Carrillo was questioned by Canadian police for several hours on Tuesday in connection with a domestic dispute. According to the Love News report, the circumstances surrounding the dispute are still being verified. The details of the incident, including the roles of those involved, have not been confirmed, no charges have been reported, and Breaking Belize News has not independently verified the accounts up to news time. Carrillo has not commented publicly on the matter.

Love News further reported that the Ministry has been in communication with its Canadian counterparts and the relevant authorities since Wednesday, seeking to establish the facts before determining whether any action is necessary.

The report has drawn a public call for clarification from the opposition. In a social media post on Wednesday, the United Democratic Party’s Alberto August asked Prime Minister John Briceño, in his capacity as Minister of Civil Aviation, and Foreign Affairs Minister Francis Fonseca to confirm or deny the reports, and to outline any course of corrective action should they prove accurate. August also invited the Special Envoy for Women, Families and Children and PUP Women’s Group figure Dolores Balderamos Garcia to weigh in, and argued the matter carries reputational implications for Belize abroad. “The nation awaits word from those who are supposed to be leading,” he wrote.

Carrillo, a former Chief Executive Officer in the Ministry of the Blue Economy and Civil Aviation, was appointed to the Montreal based post in September of last year following Belize’s historic first election to Part Three of the ICAO Council. As with any diplomatic posting, the representative serves at the government’s discretion, and Belize’s seat on the Council belongs to the country rather than to any individual.
