It has been 22 years since You Got Served hit U.S. theaters on January 30, 2004, and somehow, the movie’s dance battles still live rent-free in the memories of an entire generation. Long before viral dance challenges and TikTok choreography, You Got Served turned the underground dance scene into a full-blown cinematic event. With a young, star-studded cast, jaw-dropping choreography and enough dramatic dance battles to keep viewers on the edge of their seats, the film became much more than just another early-2000s dance movie. What was You Got Served about?

Directed by Chris Stokes, the 2004 drama follows best friends David and Elgin, played by Omarion and Marques Houston, who lead a talented street dance crew in Los Angeles. Their big dream? To open their own dance and recording studio.

Of course, things don’t exactly go according to plan.

In true movie fashion, the pair need money to make their dream a reality, so they enter an underground dance competition where serious cash — and serious bragging rights — are on the line. But when betrayal, rivalry and a devastating loss threaten to tear the crew apart, David and Elgin find themselves on opposite sides of a friendship that once seemed unbreakable.

Eventually, the dancers put their differences aside, create a new style and reunite for one last shot at proving they are the best on the streets.

And audiences absolutely ate it up.

The movie became a cultural phenomenon, particularly among young fans who didn’t just watch the dance battles — they wanted to recreate them. Omarion reflected on the movie’s impact in a 2014 interview with Billboard, recalling just how far the phenomenon had spread:

“I remember, in the first week that it came out, we got reports that people were actually battling in the theaters,” he recalled. “It became more than just a movie — it became a part of culture. And that’s like… you can’t ask for anything more. People always ask me if I’m going to do another dance movie, and it’s hard to say if I would ever do another dance movie, because, really, that was like the top of the top for me.”

At the 2004 American Choreography Awards, You Got Served won for Outstanding Achievement in Choreography – Feature Film. The award was shared by choreographers Dave Scott, Shane Sparks and Robert Hoffman, who also played rival dancer Max.

The film also picked up notable nominations at the 2004 MTV Movie Awards, including Best Dance Sequence for Omarion and Marques Houston and Breakout Male Performance for Omarion.
