The Government of Zimbabwe has unveiled its National Artificial Intelligence Strategy alongside the launch of the AI Grand Challenge, marking a major milestone in the country’s push to harness emerging technologies for national development. The announcement was made at an event held at the Golden Conifer in Harare under the theme “AI for Impact,” bringing together innovators, technology leaders, and young entrepreneurs.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of ICT, Postal and Courier Services, Hon. Tatenda Mavetera, emphasized the importance of developing practical and inclusive AI solutions that address Zimbabwe’s core development needs. She noted that the country is not seeking artificial intelligence that is merely sophisticated in concept, but rather solutions that deliver real, measurable benefits to citizens.
The national strategy focuses on using AI to improve key sectors such as healthcare, agriculture, education, and financial inclusion. It envisions tools that can expand access to healthcare for rural mothers, support market women in accessing financial opportunities, equip farmers with climate-smart technologies, and enhance learning outcomes for children across the country.
A key component of the strategy is the development of AI systems that reflect Zimbabwe’s linguistic and cultural diversity, ensuring that technological advancements are accessible and relevant to all citizens. This approach is aimed at making sure that innovation is inclusive and grounded in local realities.
Young innovators were encouraged to take advantage of emerging opportunities in the digital economy and play an active role in shaping the country’s technological future. The Minister also referenced a Shona proverb to inspire youth participation in innovation and leadership within the AI space, reinforcing the message that change and opportunity cannot be delayed.
The AI Grand Challenge was introduced as a platform for young talent to design and showcase solutions to real-world problems, while also positioning Zimbabwean innovation on a broader stage. The initiative is expected to stimulate creativity, entrepreneurship, and problem-solving among the country’s youth.
The event concluded with a strong call for collaboration between government, industry, and innovators to build a vibrant AI ecosystem that drives impact, improves lives, and accelerates Zimbabwe’s digital transformation.
