Zimbabwe maintains 2026 World Cup unbeaten run with win over hosts Sri Lanka

The Zimbabwe senior men’s cricket team extended its unbeaten run at the ongoing T20 World Cup with a six-wicket victory over hosts Sri Lanka at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo.

The win marked Zimbabwe’s final Group B match and secured their place in the Super 8 stage, which begins on Sunday.

This follows earlier victories over Oman and Australia, while their match against Ireland ended without a result after heavy rains prevented play. The Chevrons finished top of Group B with seven points and remain the only unbeaten team in the group.

After losing the toss, Zimbabwe were put into the field and delivered a disciplined bowling performance to restrict Sri Lanka to 178 runs in their allotted 20 overs. Blessing Muzarabani, Graeme Cremer, and Brad Evans led the bowling effort, claiming two wickets each.

In response, opening batsman Brian Bennett anchored the chase with an impressive unbeaten 64 off 48 balls, guiding Zimbabwe steadily toward the target.

Captain Sikandar Raza provided crucial support with an aggressive knock of 45 runs off just 26 deliveries after coming in at number four. His innings included four boundary strikes that kept Zimbabwe firmly in control of the run chase.

Zimbabwe successfully reached the target of 179 with three balls remaining and six wickets in hand. Raza’s match-winning contribution earned him the Player of the Match award.

The Chevrons will now face the West Indies in their opening Super 8 fixture on Monday, before taking on India three days later. Zimbabwe will conclude their Super 8 campaign against regional rivals South Africa on March 1.
