*Will Smith is heading back to the big screen – this time with a major streaming deal behind him. MGM acquired worldwide rights to “Supermax” from Miramax for $70 million, with the film set to land exclusively on Prime Video. No theatrical release is planned, and a premiere date has not yet been announced, Variety reports.

The project is described as a twist-driven action thriller centered on two FBI agents investigating a murder inside the world’s most secure prison. Smith is set to star as the lead character, Rex, and production is expected to begin in mid-August, with David Gordon Green (Halloween) attached to direct.

Smith’s production company Westbrook made the announcement on Instagram, expressing enthusiasm for the collaboration. “Huge announcement today. We are thrilled to be teaming up with director David Gordon Green and our partners at Amazon MGM Studios, Miramax, and The Picture Company to bring this incredible film to life,” the post read.

“Supermax” will mark Smith’s first original movie since the infamous 2022 Academy Awards broadcast, during which he walked onstage and slapped comedian Chris Rock after Rock made a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith later issued a public apology, but the fallout was significant – he was barred from attending the Oscars ceremony for ten years. The evening carried a painful irony: Smith won his first Academy Award for his performance in “King Richard.”

His most recent release, “Bad Boys: Ride or Die,” earned $404 million at the global box office in 2024.
