10 Hikers Team Up to Rescue Tangled Turtle from Massive Ghost Net

When a morning hike along Sodwana Bay turned into an emergency rescue mission, a group of men proved just how powerful compassion can be by coming together to save an entangled sea turtle and return him safely to the big blue.

Sodwana Bay, South Africa (18 May 2026) – When a group set out to adventure along the Thonga Trails in Sodwana Bay  –ready for untouched beaches, indigenous forests, and ocean safaris– the last thing they expected was to be stopped by a foreign object crashing in the surf.

They were walking past Castle Rock when they spotted a massive net rolling in the surf zone close to the beach. To their shock, it wasn’t just a ghost net; there was actually a turtle tangled up inside it.

“Immediately the rescue mission started, which wasn’t easy at all as the net was too heavy to just pull out and the waves made it challenging to get it cut,” the Thonga Trails team shared in a post.

Images and video shared online show that it took about 10 grown men tugging and pulling at the heavy net to finally bring it to shore.

“Luckily, we managed to get him loose eventually, untangled, and we saw him make his way back to sea, unharmed. We’re so grateful it was a successful mission!!”

“A big thank you to our amazing crew, and amazing trail-goers!! And it shows even more the importance of cleaning up our oceans, beaches and supporting initiatives like @mission_blue and @marineprotectedareasday to protect wildlife,” the organisation said.

Well, won’t you look at that! A morning trek through some of the most unique and breathtaking trails came with an unexpected sighting. A glimpse of a vulnerable little guy caught in a rather awful position, but miraculously found just in time. Now, he’s free and back in the big blue, and we can only hope he won’t find himself entangled in anything he shouldn’t be moving forward.

This is just one of those unexpected moments where our people’s compassion shines through in the most special way. It just never gets old.
