The resilient youth of Uitsig are erasing gang graffiti and reclaiming their spaces to paint a brighter, safer future for their community.

Uitsig, South Africa (26 May 2026) – In Uitsig, Ravensmead, gang graffiti does not just mark walls. It marks territory, dictating who owns the streets.

However, a resilient group of local youth are working together to completely flip that narrative by picking up paintbrushes.

The HOOD Youth Development Project – a non-profit organisation working to restore dignity for the people of Uitsig – has launched the Dignify the Youth initiative to steer vulnerable young people away from crime and gangsterism.

The initiative recruits at-risk youth to paint over gang tags, clear illegal dumping sites, and restore public spaces, thereby converting local flashpoints into symbols of community pride.

“Our area struggles with high levels of crime and gangsterism, and many young people are at risk of being drawn into negative activities,” states Adam Alexander of Dignify the Youth.

“By involving them in positive community work such as painting, cleaning and planting, we aim to divert them from crime and guide them toward responsibility, teamwork and pride in their environment,” he continues.

The immediate impact has been striking. Young volunteers have just completed exterior transformations for six elderly residents who could not maintain their homes, alongside a full renewal of the local community centre.

Coatings brand, Plascon stepped in to supply the paint,

“The support has made a meaningful difference,’” says Alexander.

But the true story lies in how changing a physical environment can fundamentally restore hope and self-worth to an entire neighbourhood. With each young person turning away from negative influences and applying their brushstroke on a tainted wall, the entire effort is revealing how a fresh coat of paint can change environments for individuals and communities.

Derelict community spaces are being reclaimed, and the hope and pride of residents are being restored.
