Tokyo, Japan: Where to Eat, Stay, Shop, and Experience the City’s Best Hidden Gems

There’s something about Tokyo that keeps calling me back.

This was my second time visiting Japan’s capital, but this time I got to experience it with a friend, which made the trip even more memorable. One thing I love about Tokyo is that no matter how many times you visit, you’ll always discover something new. From incredible food and hidden nightlife to luxury shopping and unique neighborhoods, Tokyo continues to surprise me.

If you’re planning your first trip to Tokyo—or even your second—here’s everything I think you should add to your itinerary.

Getting Around Tokyo: Skip the Uber and Take the Train

One thing you’ll learn very quickly in Tokyo is that the train is your best friend.

Yes, Uber is available, but it can get expensive very fast. Between traffic and long rides across the city, taking the train or subway is often much quicker and significantly cheaper.

Japan’s public transportation system is one of the cleanest and most efficient I’ve ever experienced. The stations are easy to navigate once you get the hang of them, the trains are incredibly punctual, and one thing you’ll immediately notice is how quiet everyone is.

Unlike many major cities around the world, people actually respect the peaceful atmosphere. It makes commuting feel relaxing instead of stressful.

If you’re planning to explore neighborhoods like Shibuya, Shinjuku, Ueno, Ginza, or Nakameguro, taking the train will save you both time and money.

Stay at Moxy Tokyo

If you’re looking for a modern hotel in a convenient location, the Moxy Tokyo is a great option.

Now let me be honest—hotel rooms in Tokyo are known for being small, and they’re definitely not cheap. If you’re looking for a spacious luxury suite, be prepared to spend some serious money.

The rooms at the Moxy were compact, but they were clean, modern, and had everything we needed after spending our days exploring the city.

The biggest advantage was the location. Being within walking distance of the train station made getting around Tokyo incredibly easy. There were also plenty of restaurants, convenience stores, and cafés nearby, making it a convenient home base for the trip.

Luxury Shopping Without Luxury Prices

One of my favorite places to shop in Japan is Book-Off Super Bazaar.

If you love designer fashion but don’t love designer prices, this place is a hidden gem. The Super Bazaar which are basically their department stores are always on the outskirts about a hour away, but it’s always worth the commute! They have the best prices when it’s outside of the city. And they always have a huge LV selection!

Japan is known for taking incredible care of luxury goods, so you’ll often find authentic designer bags, luggage, shoes, and accessories in excellent condition for a fraction of retail prices.

This trip I scored two of my favorite purchases—a Louis Vuitton Keepall 60 duffle bag and a Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 that works perfectly as a carry-on. If you’re into luxury resale shopping, Book-Off should absolutely be on your Tokyo itinerary.

Support Black-Owned: Didi Grande Steakhouse

One thing I always enjoy while traveling is finding Black-owned businesses around the world.

Didi Grande Steakhouse was one of those unexpected finds that I’m so glad we visited.

The restaurant has an intimate, welcoming atmosphere with a playlist full of R&B and hip-hop that immediately made us feel comfortable.

The food was equally impressive.

If you go, order the shrimp tapas.

They were packed with flavor and easily one of my favorite appetizers from the trip. Pair them with one of their cocktails, sit back, enjoy the music, and appreciate the fact that you’ve found a little piece of Black excellence in the middle of Tokyo.

Lunch at Nakame Chanote Is a Must

Out of everywhere I ate during this trip, Nakame Chanote easily became one of my favorite restaurants.

Everything was incredibly fresh, flavorful, and beautifully presented.

The Wagyu Bowl was rich, tender, and full of flavor, while the Wagyu Matcha Burger offered one of the most unique combinations I’ve ever tried.

At first, I wasn’t sure what to expect from a matcha burger, but after one bite, I completely understood why people recommend this place.

If you’re a foodie, don’t leave Tokyo without stopping here for lunch.

Fresh Seafood Lovers Need to Visit Tamatebako Shibuya

If seafood is your thing, prepare yourself.

Tamatebako Shibuya offers one of the freshest seafood barbecue experiences in Tokyo.

Some of the seafood is so fresh that you actually choose it directly from live tanks before it’s prepared.

We’re talking endless crab legs, oysters, scallops, mussels, sake, and if you’re feeling a little extra, you can even upgrade your experience to include unlimited steamed lobster tails.

Everything tasted incredibly fresh, and cooking your own seafood at the table made the meal even more interactive.

It’s the kind of dining experience you remember long after your vacation ends.

Drinks With One of the Best Views in Tokyo

If you’re looking for rooftop views, Soak Rooftop Restaurant should definitely be on your list.

The atmosphere is stylish, the cocktails are excellent, and the panoramic views overlooking Shibuya are absolutely stunning.

Whether you’re celebrating, on a date, or simply looking for a beautiful place to unwind after a day of sightseeing, this rooftop is worth the visit.

Hidden Bars Are Where Tokyo Shines

Some of the best experiences in Tokyo happen when you wander off the main streets.

We found one of the cutest hidden bars called Ginza Ittoku tucked away from the crowds, and it ended up becoming one of my favorite nights of the trip.

The atmosphere was welcoming, LGBTQ+ friendly, and full of energy.

They served delicious tapas, had karaoke throughout the night, and offered an unlimited drink option that quickly turned strangers into new friends.

Good food, endless drinks, karaoke, and great people?

That’s always a recipe for an unforgettable night.

End the Night at Chronofake Ueno

If clubs aren’t your thing but you still want a great nightlife experience, Chronofake Ueno is exactly where you need to be.

This R&B bar plays all the classics, creating the perfect atmosphere to sing along, dance a little, and simply enjoy the music.

It has a grown and sexy vibe that I absolutely loved.

Admission is only 1,000 yen with a one-drink minimum, making it an affordable night out while experiencing Tokyo’s local nightlife scene.

Why I’ll Always Return to Tokyo

Every time I visit Tokyo, I leave with a greater appreciation for how effortlessly the city blends tradition with modern culture.

One minute you’re shopping for luxury vintage finds, the next you’re eating some of the best Wagyu you’ve ever had, singing karaoke with new friends, riding one of the world’s best train systems, or discovering a hidden rooftop overlooking one of the busiest intersections in the world.

Tokyo isn’t a city you visit once.

It’s a city you keep coming back to because there’s always another neighborhood to explore, another unforgettable meal waiting for you, and another experience that reminds you why Japan continues to be one of the best destinations in the world.
