By Zoila Palma: Twenty-three new Peace Corps Volunteers were sworn in on Wednesday marking the completion of their training and the start of their service in communities across Belize.
The U.S. Embassy in Belize noted that the new cohort includes 15 Youth Development Volunteers, representing the fourth group serving under the Youth Empowered by Sports (YES) Project, and eight Education Volunteers serving as Peace Corps Response Volunteers.
The Volunteers will work in partnership with government ministries, community leaders and local organizations to support national priorities in youth development and education across all six districts.
The YES Project, implemented in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism, Youth, Sports and Diaspora Relations, uses sports, mentorship and resiliency-building activities to help young people lead healthy and empowered lives.
Meanwhile, education initiatives, carried out in partnership with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Science and Technology and PathLight International, focus on STEAM, early childhood education and literacy support.
Senator Janelle Chanona delivered the keynote address, while U.S. Embassy Chargé d’Affaires Rhonda Slusher administered the oath of service.
Peace Corps Belize Country Director Dr. Nadine Rogers commended the new Volunteers for their commitment, saying, “These 23 Americans came to Belize ready to serve; literally bringing our new mission to life.”
The swearing-in ceremony comes as the Peace Corps celebrates its 65th anniversary and highlights its mission of putting “purpose, passion, and skills to work for America and the world.”
Peace Corps has partnered with Belize for 64 years to advance community-led development, with Volunteers continuing to support efforts that expand opportunities for young people and strengthen education nationwide.
