57-year-old man remanded to prison after allegedly groping 14-year-old girl who was having sleepover with his daughter

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 57-year-old man has been remanded to the Belize Central Prison following allegations that he sexually assaulted a 14-year-old girl during a sleepover.

Salvador Cus appeared unrepresented before the Chief Magistrate in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning, where he was read a single charge of sexual assault. Due to the nature of the offense involving a minor, he was denied bail.

According to police reports, the incident occurred at around 3:30 a.m. on Sunday, July 12, 2026, while the victim was staying overnight at a friend’s home. The minor reported that she was walking in the hallway when Cus grabbed her with both hands and touched her inappropriately. When the victim questioned his actions, Cus reportedly began to smile.

The minor then proceeded to the kitchen to get a glass of water, where Cus allegedly followed her and grabbed her buttocks twice. The victim immediately contacted her mother, and the police were notified, leading to Cus’s arrest.

During the arraignment, the Chief Magistrate informed Cus that no plea would be taken at this stage. She emphasized that the court is highly reluctant to grant bail in sexual matters involving minors, citing a concerning increase in such allegations across the country.

While Cus faces one count of sexual assault, the prosecution noted that a second charge is expected to be leveled against him, as the case facts clearly detail two distinct acts of assault. The Chief Magistrate also advised Cus that the court is awaiting directives from the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to determine whether the matter will be tried summarily in the lower court or on indictment at the High Court.

Cus has been remanded into custody until his next scheduled court appearance on October 13, 2026. He maintains the liberty to apply for bail through the High Court in the interim.
