A-Reece Celebrates Four Years Of “The Burning Tree” EP. South African hip-hop star A-Reece paused to mark a meaningful moment on April 20, revisiting one of the most immersive releases in his catalogue. The Pretoria-born artist, widely known as The Boy, celebrated four years since the release of his haze-filled EP The Burning Tree, a project fans fondly refer to as TBT.

Taking to social media, he leaned into the spirit of the record with a message that echoed its mood. “They say time flies when you’re getting high,” he wrote. He followed it up with a nod to both the anniversary and the global cannabis celebration, wishing a happy 4/20 to supporters across the world.
Originally released on 4/20 in 2022, the EP arrived unannounced and fully embraced a laid-back, weed-centric aesthetic. Running for just under 25 minutes, the project blended mellow production with introspective lyricism. It also brought together a lineup of local collaborators, including Jay Jody, 25K, IMP THA DON, Loatinover Pounds, Maggz and Boy Wonder. Songs such as For My Sanity, Red Dragon and the interlude Live Once offered snapshots of introspection, altered states and the passing of time through a smoky lens.
The title itself conjured a striking image, not of destruction but of a slow, fragrant burn that aligns with cannabis culture. Released independently via Revenge Club Records, the EP found a strong following both locally and beyond. It quickly became a staple for chilled listening, with tracks pulling in millions of streams. “For My Sanity” in particular stood out for its raw and vulnerable tone.
Four years later, the anniversary once again coincides with 4/20, adding to the celebratory energy. A-Reece extended his appreciation to “cloud chasers,” a phrase that has come to define fans who connect deeply with both his music and its lifestyle influences.
Although he has since delivered projects such as P2: The Big Hearted Bad Guy, The Burning Tree remains a distinctive entry in his discography. It represents a creative shift toward atmosphere and mood, showing his willingness to explore new sonic spaces while maintaining a personal connection with listeners.
