Experienced Nigerian coach Abdul Maikaba has been appointed as the new head coach of the Flying Eagles, Nigeria’s U-20 men’s national team.
Maikaba takes over from Aliyu Zubairu, who led the team to the Round of 16 at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Chile last year.
Reports indicate the appointment is part of efforts to build on the recent progress recorded by the national youth side.
Zubairu, who was appointed in September 2024, enjoyed a successful spell with the Flying Eagles.
Under his leadership, Nigeria won the WAFU B U-20 Championship and secured qualification for both the 2025 Africa U-20 Cup of Nations and the FIFA U-20 World Cup.
One of the highlights of his tenure was a 2-1 victory over Ghana in the WAFU B final in Togo.
His side also gained recognition for their disciplined style of play and solid tactical structure.
Maikaba now steps into the role with a wealth of experience in Nigerian football.
The Kano-born tactician has previously served as assistant coach of the Flying Eagles and has managed several top Nigeria Premier Football League clubs, including Enyimba, Kano Pillars, Rangers, Akwa United and Plateau United.
Among his major achievements at club level was guiding Akwa United to Aiteo Cup success, further establishing his reputation as a coach capable of building winning teams.
He also has continental experience, having worked as assistant coach to Okey Emordi during a CAF Champions League run that ended in the semi-finals.
At national team level, Maikaba has been involved with Nigeria’s U-17 and U-20 teams, including campaigns at the Africa U-17 Cup of Nations and the 2019 FIFA U-20 World Cup.
His appointment is expected to usher in a fresh era for the Flying Eagles, with hopes that his experience and tactical knowledge will help Nigeria remain a strong force in youth football.
