*So… Akon decided to give the internet a biology lesson. And yeah — it went exactly how you’d expect.

The Senegalese American singer and entrepreneur Akon (real name Aliaune Thiam) is trending after doubling down on his views about polygamy — specifically, why men should be allowed multiple women… and women absolutely should not have the same freedom.

The comments came during a recent interview with media personality Justin Laboy, and once the clip hit Instagram, YouTube, and forums like Lipstick Alley, it spread fast.

Because of course it did.

“It Doesn’t Work That Way”

When asked whether women should have the same ability to have multiple partners, Akon didn’t hesitate.

“Absolutely not. It doesn’t work that way.”

He went further, arguing that the idea only seems “twisted” in America, where — in his words — women believe they’re equal to men.

Then came the explanation that really set social media on fire.

“A woman can only have one baby per year. A man can have a thousand. That’s our purpose… that’s nature.”

According to Akon, men are “natural breeders” and simply aren’t wired for strict monogamy in the same way women are.

Translation: men get options. Women… not so much.

The Internet Reacts — Loudly

As expected, the reaction was immediate — and messy.

Supporters backed Akon’s stance, calling it “just facts” rooted in biology and traditional roles. Some argued that Western culture has blurred natural differences between men and women, and that his comments simply say out loud what others won’t.

Others? Not impressed.

Critics quickly labeled the take outdated, hypocritical, and conveniently one-sided. Many pointed out that real-world polygamy — especially in cultures Akon references — comes with strict rules around financial support, fairness, and responsibility.

Not exactly the same as juggling multiple relationships and calling it “nature.”

And then, of course, came the memes.

Lots of memes.

Context Matters — Or Does It?

To be fair, Akon has been consistent about his views.

He’s previously spoken about traditional gender roles and how his perspective is influenced by his Senegalese Muslim background, where polygyny — one man with multiple wives — is accepted in certain contexts.

But critics argue that context is exactly what’s being left out of the conversation.

Because in those systems, polygamy isn’t just about access — it comes with structure, accountability, and expectations that don’t exactly fit into modern “do what you want” dating culture.

That’s where the argument starts to fall apart for a lot of people.

The Double Standard Debate Isn’t New

At its core, Akon’s comments tap into a much older — and ongoing — debate about gender roles, biology, and relationship dynamics.

Some lean into evolutionary psychology, arguing that men and women are naturally wired differently when it comes to reproduction and commitment.

Others push back, saying biology doesn’t justify double standards — especially in modern relationships built on mutual respect and choice.

And somewhere in the middle? A whole lot of people just trying to figure out what actually makes sense in real life.

One Thing Is Clear… The Internet Isn’t Letting This Go

If Akon was trying to spark a conversation, mission accomplished.

The clip is still circulating, still trending, and still dividing timelines.

Because if there’s one thing social media loves, it’s a bold opinion.

And if there’s one thing it loves even more?

A bold opinion that sounds like a double standard.
