Allegations against Sefara are serious: Sanef
SIU accused Makhudu Sefara and others of misappropriation of lottery funds.
The South African National Editors’ Forum (Sanef) has welcomed the decision of its chairperson, Makhudu Sefara, to step aside pending an investigation into allegations of lottery funds misappropriation.
This follows the Special Investigating Unit’s (SIU) revelation that a company linked to Sefara had improperly benefited from stolen lottery funds intended for community development.
Sefara has denied any wrongdoing.
The forum has appointed Deputy Chairperson Tshamano Makhadi as acting chairperson.
Sanef Executive Director Reggy Moalusi says the seriousness of the allegations has necessitated urgent action.
Moalusi says, “The allegations are quite serious that are being made and as Sanef, we are also a media advocacy organisation, and we prioritise everything ethical when it comes to journalism and our journalists and so forth. And given what’s happening, given that SIU statement, we agreed that it would be in the interest of the organisation that he steps aside, the deputy takes charge, and we are not saying he’s resigning from the organisation, he’s stepping aside up until all this has been resolved.”
