Alphonse finishes third in Martinique on Independence Day

Saint Lucian cycling starlet Denver Alphonse Jr took the bronze medal in the Under-23 division at the fifth edition of the Grand Prix Mill€co.Shop in Le Robert, Martinique, over the weekend of February 21-22. The 18-year-old from La Caye, Dennery, finished fifth in the Under-19 division last year.

Alphonse Jr, an alumnus of Entrepot Secondary School, was riding in Martinique for ASC Karaïbes Culture Sports for the second time this year. Of 39 riders who started the Elite, Under-19, and Under-23 race over two stages totalling 138.6 kilometres, he finished 16th overall and third in his age category.

Alphonse was 15th in the six-kilometre time trial and then 16th in the road race. Organised by Jeunesse Cycliste 231 under the auspices of the French Cycling Federation, the Grand Prix Mill€co.Shop took riders from Place Christian Marajo, Le François, Le Lamentin and Le Robert, finishing at Place Christian Marajo in front of Mack 2 Mercy.

Edwin Nubul of VC François won the second stage, but Jules Chatelon of Madinina Bikers secured the overall victory, succeeding Stefan Bennett of Jeunesse Cycliste 231 as champion.

It was a weekend of celebration for Alphonse, as his national championship jersey was raised in KOERS, the Belgian museum of Cycle Racing. The museum is based in Roeselare, at the heart of West Flanders, a region famous for producing some of the finest cyclists in the world. Alphonse is the first Saint Lucian to be recognised by the organisation.
