By Zoila Palma: Belize has marked several important milestones in regional environmental action with the launch of major initiatives aimed at protecting natural resources, strengthening climate resilience and promoting sustainable development.
The initiatives were launched by the Ministry of Sustainable Development, Climate Change and Solid Waste Management in collaboration with the Central American Commission on Environment and Development (CCAD) during Belize’s Pro Tempore Presidency.
Among the key developments is the updated CCAD Regional Environmental Framework Strategy (ERAM) 2026–2035, which will serve as a shared environmental strategy for the SICA region.
The framework seeks to promote an environmentally sustainable, resilient and inclusive future through action on environmental quality, seas and biodiversity, integrated water-resource management, forests and sustainable landscapes, and climate change.
Belize also joined the launch of the new “Great Forests of Central America and the Dominican Republic” brand, known as Green Heritage or “Patrimonio Verde.”
The communication strategy aims to strengthen regional storytelling by highlighting measurable results, environmental impacts, data-driven decision-making and the network of partners working across Central America and the Dominican Republic.
Another major initiative is the regional CAM Project, implemented in partnership with the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), which will invest US$20 million to improve watershed management and protect marine ecosystems.
Belize’s Belize River, New River and Rio Hondo watersheds have been identified as priority areas.
Chief Environmental Officer Anthony Mai said the project will strengthen governance, promote integrated watershed and coastal-zone management, support nature-based solutions and sustainable financing, and build regional technical capacity.
Belize also formalized a new Memorandum of Understanding with The Nature Conservancy to strengthen cooperation on freshwater conservation and aquatic ecosystem management.
The partnership will support ecosystem restoration, monitoring and data systems, freshwater biodiversity conservation, climate adaptation, public awareness and transboundary water cooperation.
The initiatives were supported by Minister Orlando Habet, CEO Milagro Matus and technical leaders from the Ministry and regional partners, as Belize continues efforts toward a more resilient and sustainable future.
