Belize businessman says country is not ready for medical emergencies after nephew forced to seek care in Melchor

Fernando A. Boteo shared his concerns on social media, declaring that “Belize is not ready for an emergency.”

According to Boteo, he contacted doctors and emergency services while trying to secure immediate medical assistance for his nephew, but none of the services he contacted were available to provide the help needed at the time.

He said his nephew eventually had to travel to Melchor to obtain medical attention.

Boteo stressed that his criticism was not intended simply to assign blame, but to call attention to what he believes are serious shortcomings in emergency preparedness.

He called for better emergency services, greater availability and a healthcare system capable of responding when lives are potentially at risk.

“We should never have to leave our country to find emergency medical care when someone needs help right now,” Boteo wrote.
