Belize mourns passing of 1st female Mayor Daisy Olga Marin

By Zoila Palma:  Belize is mourning the passing of Daisy Olga Marin of Corozal Town, a pioneering leader whose contributions to public service, business and community development left a lasting mark on the nation.

Marin holds the historic distinction of being Belize’s first female mayor, elected in the 1981 municipal elections under the banner of the People’s United Party during a period when women in leadership positions were rare.

Her election came at a defining moment in Belize’s history, coinciding with the year of the country’s independence.

As Mayor of Corozal Town, Marin played a key role in advancing local development while breaking barriers in municipal governance. Her leadership opened doors for greater female participation in public office and established her as a trailblazer in Belizean politics.

Marin’s impact extended beyond political life. In 1964, she established and managed Corozal Town’s first auto parts store, laying the foundation for a career in business and entrepreneurship that contributed to the district’s local economy.

She also dedicated years of service to civic and humanitarian causes through organizations and committees including HelpAge Corozal and the Red Cross. Her service further included appointments as Senior Justice of the Peace and Commissioner of the Supreme Court, reflecting the trust and respect she earned throughout her community.

Her contributions to Belize were formally recognized with the Order of Distinction Award, one of the country’s highest honours.

In a statement issued through the Office of the Secretary General, the People’s United Party (PUP) expressed deep sorrow at her passing, describing her as a trailblazer whose work helped shape both Corozal Town and Belize’s wider civic landscape.

Daisy Olga Marin leaves behind a legacy of leadership, service and perseverance that continues to inspire generations of Belizeans, particularly women pursuing roles in public life.
