Belize participates in Central American Agricultural Council meeting in Costa Rica

By Zoila Palma:  Today, Ordinary Meeting of the Central American Agricultural Council (CAC) began in San José, Costa Rica.

Belize is being represented by Minister of Agriculture Rodwell Ferguson.

The forum brings together the Ministers of Agriculture from the countries of the Central American Integration System (SICA) to strengthen regional coordination and advance a joint agenda for the sustainable development of the agricultural sector.

During the proceedings, officials will address strategic issues aimed at strengthening food security, climate resilience, agricultural health, and regional cooperation. Special attention will also be given to the agricultural sector’s response to the 2026–2027 El Niño phenomenon and its potential regional impacts, fostering coordinated actions to safeguard food production and bolster the response capacity of member countries.

CAC Executive Secretary David Martínez highlighted the importance of this dialogue in continuing to drive collaborative efforts among SICA countries and consolidating a regional agenda that addresses the agricultural sector’s key challenges.

Also, in attendance were Muhammad Ibrahim, Director General of the Inter-American Institute for Cooperation on Agriculture (IICA); and David Martínez, CAC Executive Secretary.

They reiterated the importance of strengthening regional integration and cooperation among countries to jointly address the challenges facing the agricultural sector.
