By Breaking Belize News Staff (HP): Prime Minister John Briceño has extended Belize’s support to Venezuela in the wake of the devastating earthquakes that struck the South American nation, pledging the country’s readiness to help, including by deploying Belizean linesmen to assist with restoring electricity.
In a post on social media, the Prime Minister said he had spoken with Venezuela’s Vice President, Delcy Rodríguez, who has been acting as the country’s president, following the disaster. “Yesterday, I spoke with President Delcy Rodríguez following the devastating earthquake in Venezuela,” Briceño said. “I assured her that Belize stands with the Venezuelan people and is ready to assist, including deploying Belizean linesmen to help restore electricity.”
The offer of practical assistance comes after twin earthquakes struck northern Venezuela, leaving widespread destruction in their wake. The quakes, which hit within seconds of each other, were among the most powerful to strike the country in over a century, claiming many lives and damaging homes, buildings, and critical infrastructure, including power systems.
Earlier, the Prime Minister had publicly expressed his condolences to those affected. “On behalf of the people of Belize, I extend our deepest sympathies to the people and Government of Venezuela following the recent earthquakes,” he said. “At moments such as these, our nations are reminded that our shared humanity is stronger than any challenge nature may bring.”
As Venezuela begins the long and painful process of recovery, the Prime Minister’s words and offer of support stand as a reminder of the bonds that connect nations across the region.
