BC Highway Patrol is asking the parents of a young male rider, or anyone else who knows him, to come forward after he fled from police in North Vancouver.
On August 28 at 6:11 p.m., a BC Highway Patrol officer attempted to stop an electric motorcycle on Grand Boulevard in North Vancouver. Instead of stopping, the operator accelerated through a stop sign before fleeing police.
“A lot of people are buying electric motorcycles that have no pedals, no signal lights, and no business on public roads,” says Sgt. Michael McLaughlin with BC Highway Patrol. “Your children might ‘promise’ to ride their machines responsibly and keep off public roads, but that’s not what’s happening.”
The rider appeared to have a low level of skill and nearly collided with a car before fleeing. The BC Highway Patrol officer chose to pull over immediately to prevent the young rider from harming himself or someone else.
The rider’s face is blurred in the video due to the requirements of the Youth Criminal Justice Act, but police are asking anyone who recognizes him to contact BC Highway Patrol. The rider who fled from police is described as:
* A young male (likely 14-18 years old) with a skinny build,
* Brown skin,
* Clean-shaven with a receding chin,
* Wearing a white bicycle helmet with a visor, a black hoodie, black cuffed jeans, and black Adidas sneakers.
“We’re seeing an increasing number of young riders who attempt to bait police into a pursuit,” says McLaughlin. “This is stupid. Police are trying to keep everyone safe, and we need parents to start helping us out so we can prevent their kids from hurting themselves, or worse.”
Anyone who knows the identity of the North Vancouver rider who fled from police is asked to call BC Highway Patrol – Squamish at 604-892-6100.
