Canadian man who ran from police for drinking in public busted with 6.78 grams of cocaine; charged with drug trafficking

By Breaking Belize News Staff: A Canadian businessman living in Placencia has been charged with two counts of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply after police allegedly found a total of 6.78 grams of suspected cocaine in his possession on Sunday evening.

Police say that at about 6:45 p.m. on August 16, officers were conducting mobile patrol on the Placencia Main Road when their attention was drawn to 52-year-old Grant Arthur Stowell, who was allegedly drinking from a Belikin beer bottle in public.

According to police, when officers approached and asked Stowell to desist from public drinking, he became agitated and eventually ran into a nearby store. An officer pursued him and allegedly saw Stowell remove an item from his pocket and place it on a store shelf.

Police retrieved a piece of tissue paper which allegedly contained a small transparent plastic bag with a white powdery substance suspected to be cocaine. The substance was later weighed at 5.60 grams.

Police say a subsequent search of Stowell’s wallet led to the discovery of another small plastic bag containing suspected cocaine weighing 1.18 grams.

Stowell, described by police as a Canadian business owner residing in Placencia, was formally arrested and charged with two counts of possession of controlled drugs with intent to supply. He reportedly exercised his right to remain silent after being cautioned.
