There is something profoundly unsettling about seeing the doors of a building closed when they should be open.  It is even more unsettling when that building is more than bricks and mortar. The Africa Centre has been a ‘home away from home’ for generations of people of African descent. A place of belonging, creativity, debate, celebration and community. Only hours before its doors closed, those same spaces had been alive with music, conversation and world-class talent.  Then the lights went out.  As Chief Executive, instructing that those doors close was one of the hardest moments of my professional life. Not because of what it meant for me personally, but because of what it meant for the institution, for our staff, our partners, our volunteers and the community that has sustained The Africa Centre for more than six decades.  The Journey to the Moment  Yet none of this happened overnight.  There is a Yoruba p...
