Chilonga Bridge to shut for three months to allow major repairs 

THE Ministry of Transport and Infrastructural Development has announced that Chilonga Bridge Road in Chiredzi will be temporarily shut to allow for urgent rehabilitation work aimed at boosting road safety and durability.

In a public notice released Friday, the ministry said the Chiredzi–Chilonga–Chibwedziwa Road, popularly known as Chilonga Bridge Road, will be closed to both vehicles and pedestrians from July 27 to October 27, 2026.

The shutdown will cover Chilonga Bridge and its immediate approaches. Motorists have been advised to use the Triangle–Mbizo Road and other marked alternative routes to access Chiredzi and Chikombedzi.

The ministry called on drivers, commuter operators and pedestrians to make early travel arrangements and to follow all traffic control measures that will be implemented during the repair period.

“Signage and traffic marshals will be deployed at key points to guide road users,” the ministry said.

It noted that the temporary closure is essential to protect road users and to ensure the project is completed on schedule. The works are part of government’s pledge under the National Development Strategy 2 (NDS2) and Vision 2030 to deliver safer, more resilient and modern road infrastructure.

The ministry also expressed regret for the disruption and urged the public to cooperate during the rehabilitation period.

The repairs come after Parliament approved ZiG30 million for the construction of a new Chilonga Bridge in Chiredzi. The allocation was raised in Parliament by Chiredzi Central legislator Ropafadzo Makumire, who requested an update on fund disbursement and project progress.

Government said the works fall under its ongoing “Kilometre by Kilometre” road rehabilitation programme, which is targeting improvements to the national road network.
