Dr. Anni Seaborne explains that brushing alone is not enough to maintain full oral health. While many people brush regularly, they often overlook cleaning between the teeth, where plaque and bacteria tend to build up.
“Flossing and using interdental brushes might feel like an extra step, but it makes a huge difference,” Dr Seaborne says, per Stylist UK. She emphasizes that toothbrushes cannot reach every area of the mouth, leaving gaps where bacteria can accumulate. “Your toothbrush can’t reach in between your teeth, which is where plaque and bacteria build up.”
The impact of neglecting flossing goes beyond dental hygiene. Dr Seaborne notes that poor gum health has been linked to broader health concerns, including conditions such as heart disease and diabetes. “It’s not just about your teeth – it’s about taking care of your overall wellbeing.”
A key mistake many people make is the timing of flossing. Most individuals brush first and floss afterward, assuming the order does not matter. However, dental guidance suggests this approach is less effective for protecting teeth.
“It’s best to floss or use interdental brushes before you brush,” Dr Seaborne explains. She adds that this method helps remove trapped debris first, allowing toothpaste to work more effectively. “It helps loosen anything stuck between your teeth, so when you do brush afterwards, the fluoride in your toothpaste can reach those areas more easily.”
For those seeking a more effective routine, interdental brushes are recommended as a strong alternative. “They come in different sizes to fit between the gaps in your teeth and are one of the most effective ways to keep those areas clean and healthy.”
