By Aaron Humes: Police are investigating a deadly incident that occurred in the Hillview area of Santa Elena on May 16. The San Ignacio police responded to urgent reports of gunfire, only to arrive at a chaotic scene that would end in tragedy.
According to police reports, officers found a man identified as Joel Sierra in a hyperventilated state, struggling to breathe. Nearby, they discovered multiple spent bullet shells and a nine-millimeter pistol, raising questions about the circumstances surrounding the incident.
ASP Stacy Smith, the Staff Officer, provided details regarding the timeline of events, thereafter: “The male person was escorted to the hospital, where preliminary indications suggest that he was under the influence of a prohibited substance. The male person passed away sometime around 8:30 p.m. on Saturday, and a post-mortem examination is pending to ascertain the cause of death. A further check of the area, video footage in the area, showed the male person, who has since been identified as Joel Sierra, running along the street with a firearm in his hand and discharging rounds into the air.”
Investigators continue to piece together the details of the incident, and questions remain regarding the circumstances that led to Sierra’s actions leading up to the gunfire and subsequent death. The San Ignacio police are urging anyone with additional information about the incident to come forward.
