Constitution crisis
Dear Friends
This may sound like a rush. It is. The notorious Bill to make several undemocratic changes to our Constitution is still on track, and moving fast. You may have heard what a farce the consultation meetings were; all packed into a short week, only one per district with Harare counted as one district, the same as Lupane or UMP & Bulawayo as 2. People known to oppose the Bill were often passed over, meetings were often disorderly. There remains the option of written submissions, which only got much attention as the deadline for submisssions drew near. The Constitution says it should be 17 May, but since this is a Sunday, Parliament say the closing day is this coming Friday, 15 May.
Organised opposition has been slow, but Trevor Ncube, the Press Ncube not his pollytickle brother and friends have prepared a template which covers all the points. You can download a copy from
allthingszimbabwe.substack.
This includes 3 possible drafts: for voters in Zimbabawe, organisations, and for Zim citizens abroad. You can personalise the message (recommended; the other side are reported to have posted 45,000 identical submissions in one unnamed province) and should keep a record of when it was sent – but all that is in the file you can download. Please do that, read carefully, make your own emphasis and e-mail it to the parliament office address provided.
I don’t believe this will win out in the count, but if enough submissions are made and recorded, we can hope to keep the issue alive. The alternative is power concentrated in a very few hands, all of them corrupt billionaires.
Tell anybody else who might respond – immediately if not sooner, as one of our teachers in school used to say.
A luta continua
