DA candidate murder: No arrests or leads

Police have reported no new developments in the investigation into the murder of Democratic Alliance (DA) Ward 104 by-election candidate Sinovuyo Dyokwe.

A gunman shot and killed Dyokwe in Dunoon on Saturday evening. She had spent the day assisting with voter registration activities.

Western Cape police spokesperson Captain F.C. van Wyk said police have not made any breakthroughs.

Western Cape government calls for answers

The Western Cape Government has urged police to investigate every possible motive.

Western Cape Minister of Police Oversight and Community Safety Anroux Marais condemned the murder.

“This is a senseless and horrific act of violence that has robbed a family of a loved one, a community of a dedicated activist and our democracy of a person committed to serving her community,” Marais said.

Investigators urged to probe all possible motives

Marais warned against speculation. She said investigators must examine every possible lead.

Reports have linked the killing to Dyokwe’s political activities. Others point to her community activism and anti-crime advocacy.

“Whether this murder was politically motivated, linked to her community activism, her anti-crime advocacy, or any other criminal motive, those responsible must be identified and brought to justice,” she said.

Extortion crime remains a concern

Marais also raised concerns about extortion-related crime in Dunoon and surrounding communities.

She said criminal syndicates continue to intimidate residents, businesses and community leaders. She said they also fuel violence in the area.

The minister urged SAPS to intensify intelligence-led operations. She called for action against those behind extortion and intimidation.
