Residents across the District of Columbia are being encouraged to take a more active role in shaping their communities by running for Advisory Neighborhood Commissioner (ANC) as numerous seats remain without candidates ahead of the November General Election.
All nominating petitions, petition supplements, and Declarations of Candidacy with the Board of Elections must be submitted by Wednesday, August 5 at 5:00 p.m.
Advisory Neighborhood Commissioners serve two-year terms and are elected in the general election during every even numbered year.
This is the optimal time for community members to advocate for their specific community with several ANC candidates being unfiled for the Nov. 3 General Election. Each open position is an opportunity for the public to represent the concerns of their neighborhood.
ANC candidates influence regulations surrounding public safety, education and services, all while encouraging a more responsive local government. Those interested in running to be an ANC candidate can stop by the DC Board of Elections to retrieve a nomination petition.
The first date to pick up nominating petitions for ANC this year was Monday, July 6. Each candidate has a signature requirement of at least 25 registered qualified electors in the single-member district from which the candidate seeks election.
Victor Horton, Deputy Director of Center for Strong Public Schools Action Fund DC encourages residents to get involved in their communities and consider running for office.
“Our neighborhoods need leaders who are ready to serve. If you’ve ever considered getting more involved in your community, this is the perfect place to start,” said Horton in the invitation to the virtual advisory neighborhood commissioner training,“And if running isn’t for you, please share this opportunity with someone who would make a great neighborhood leader.”
