First Tanzanian Shilling Bond Issuance at the London Stock Exchange celebrated by IFC

The International Finance Corporation, a member of the World Bank Group, recently marked its inaugural Tanzanian shilling bond issuance at the London Stock Exchange.

The Tanzania Shillings 262.5 billion (US$100 million equivalent) 5-year bond is the largest TZS-denominated issuance to date in international capital markets.

The bond carries a 7.60 percent coupon and was placed with European institutional investors.

Goldman Sachs International acted as dealer for the transaction.

The issuance supports a US$100 million equivalent Tanzanian shilling loan to NMB Bank Plc to expand financing for micro, small, and medium-sized enterprises (MSMEs) across Tanzania, with 20 percent dedicated towards women-owned Micro, Small, and Medium-sized Enterprises (MSMEs).

The financing will help businesses access long-term local currency funding, reducing foreign exchange risk while supporting investment, growth, and job creation.

The transaction also supports Tanzania’s Vision 2050 ambition for private sector-led growth and advances the International Finance Corporation (IFC)’s broader efforts to deepen capital markets and expand access to local currency finance.

The transaction demonstrates the potential of offshore local currency bonds to mobilize international capital and expand local currency financing in emerging markets beyond the capacity of domestic markets.

Over the past five fiscal years, IFC has provided over US$50 billion in local currency financing across more than 60 emerging-market currencies.

International Finance Corporation complements its public issuance by accessing a variety of markets, including through private placements, thematic bonds, and local currency bonds.

IFC’s local currency financing helps clients manage foreign exchange risk while mobilizing capital for private sector development in emerging markets.
