Four face charges over alleged fake kidnapping
Police allege man staged own kidnapping with 3 others to extort R100,000 from his family.
Four suspects are expected to appear in the Johannesburg Magistrate’s Court on Friday on charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice after allegations that a 28-year-old man staged his own kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from his family.
It was initially alleged that the man had been abducted by unknown suspects who demanded a R100,000 ransom for his release.
Gauteng Police spokesperson Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi says intensive investigations and follow-up operations led police to a house in Dobsonville, where they found the alleged victim with three other individuals.
Nevhuhulwi says, “A multidisciplinary team comprising the Provincial Tracking Team, Crime Intelligence, Detectives from Johannesburg Central, the K9 Unit, Soweto Flying Squad, Fidelity Specialist Services, and Vision Tactical was immediately mobilised to locate and rescue the alleged victim. Intensive investigations and follow-up operations led the team to a house in Dobsonville, where they found the alleged victim together with three other individuals…”
“Further investigations established that the said victim had allegedly conspired with the three suspects to stage the kidnapping in an attempt to extort money from his family. All four suspects aged between 28 and 37 years old were arrested and are expected to appear before court on 07 August 2026 on charges of kidnapping and defeating the ends of justice,” Nevhuhulwi adds.
