Gauteng Education uncovers 41 cases of alleged corruption in schools

The Gauteng Department of Education has uncovered at least 41 cases of alleged corruption, maladministration and fraud in various schools across the province.

Briefing the media in Bramley, Johannesburg, Education MEC Lebogang Maile says in one school, more than R1 million was allegedly misappropriated while more than R2 million was misappropriated at another school.

He says the people involved in the cases include, teachers, principals, finance officers and School Governing Bodies.

“Of the 41 cases recorded, 22 occurred in 2023 accounting for 54% of the total. In 2025, 13 cases were recorded, accounting for 32% by June 2026, DIX cases had already emerged, accounting for 14%. This indicates that while the number of cases are fluctuating, the problem remains active and the corruption has not disappeared.”
