Google has quietly unveiled a feature that users have been requesting for decades: the ability to officially change their primary @gmail.com address.
According to a recent update to Google’s account help documentation, users will soon be able to replace their existing address with a brand-new one without losing their digital life.
The update confirms that the following will remain intact:
- Account Data: All existing emails, Drive files, and Photos.
- Integrated Services: Subscriptions, YouTube history, and Google Play purchases.
- Seamless Transition: A streamlined way to move your identity without the “scorched earth” approach of deleting an old account.
The digital trail for this feature was first spotted on the Hindi version of Google’s support page. While the English documentation has yet to reflect the change, the Hindi guidance explicitly outlines the new process.
This suggests that Google may be using India or other Hindi-speaking markets as the initial launchpad for the rollout. However, the support page noted that the feature is gradually rolling out to all users, signaling that a global release is likely on the horizon.
Until now, your Gmail address was essentially permanent. While you could add “aliases,” your primary ID was locked in stone.
