Cub Scout Grace turned her Leaping Wolf Personal Challenge into a community-wide knitting circle that is creating the softest cosies for the premature babies at Mowbray Maternity Hospital.
Cape Town, South Africa (27 May 2026) – In Scouts, the Leaping Wolf is the absolute highest award a Cub Scout (typically children between 10 and 11) can earn before moving up to becoming a Scout. To earn the badge, a Cub must complete several challenging requirements independently, usually during their final year in the Pack.
For her Leaping Wolf Personal Challenge, Grace decided to turn a newly learnt skill into something that could make a real difference!
According to 1st Muizenberg Sea Scouts, Grace taught herself how to knit using a loom. But she didn’t stop there. She went on to raise funds to buy looms and wool so she could share the craft, teaching her fellow Cubs and friends how to loom knit right alongside her!

Her goal was to encourage others to help make premie baby beanies for the neonatal unit at Mowbray Maternity Hospital.
What started as one Cub learning a craft quickly grew into a much bigger community project.
Grace hosted an evening where Cubs learnt how to make beanies together and also taught a group of women how to loom. Former NICU nurse Lee spoke about why premie beanies are so important for vulnerable newborns. Another nursing sister from Mowbray Maternity also shared more about the hospital, the premie unit, and the almost 1,000 babies born there every month.

“Even our Scouts and Scouters got involved in looming beanies for the project! We are incredibly proud of Grace for creating something that combined service, leadership, kindness, and community in such a meaningful way,” 1st Muizenberg Sea Scouts said.
From going out of your way to learn a new skill and sharing it with others, to creating soft knits that will bring warmth to many little ones in their first few days in the world – A big well done, Grace!
