At 45, as a mom of four, Jo-Anne Strauss has revisited a childhood dream, returning to ballet and beautifully reminding us that no dream is ever too old, too distant or too delayed to deserve a second chance.
Johannesburg, South Africa (22 May 2026) – Growing up, each of us desired something. It could have been simple or complex, but it took root within us and became a dream we hoped to one day achieve.
As a 45-year-old mother of four whose dream was delayed by a system that allowed only some to dream, businesswoman and media personality Jo-Anne Strauss recently shared her personal journey of returning to fulfil a childhood dream, while reminding us all that a dream delayed is not a dream denied.
In a recent social media post, she shared a video of her first adult ballet lessons, rekindling a childhood passion that clearly brought her great joy.
“Adult ballet has given me so much happiness. It was such a full circle moment for me because 34 years ago, I had to stop ballet when I left here to go to high school because the closest high school wouldn’t accept me because it was still sort of the remnants of apartheid,” Jo-Anne explains in her video.
“They said children who lived on the one side of the railway line couldn’t go to the school so I ended up taking a train for an hour and a half one way and an hour and a half back, so every day, three hours on Metro Rail, and I couldn’t go on point, which was my dream. And so today I actually had my first point class. I am back doing ballet as a 45-year-old mother of four.”
A clip shows Jo-Anne high on her tippy-toes as she follows her dance instructor’s guidance in a studio, allowing herself to fall back in love with ballet again.
Over and above sharing her excitement of getting back to ballet after so many years, Jo-Anne shared a message, in hopes of inspiring viewers to never forget their own dreams, no matter how much time has passed.
“I just wanted to take this moment to say that your dreams are valid, and don’t forget the dreams of that young girl, that young boy or that young person. And even as we grow up and we have to do these adult things and run around and responsibilities, you have a responsibility to yourself. So please don’t forget who you are and what your dreams are.”
Now isn’t that just soul-stirring… If you take away anything from this special post, let it be your sign to revisit that dream, live fully or just make your inner child happy again! Life is short, so why not just go for it?!
