*A Houston police officer has been dismissed from the force after footage emerged showing her using a racial slur against Black people.
The Houston Police Department announced Friday that Ashley Gonzalez was no longer an employee following an investigation into the recording. The clip was brought to FOX 26 by a viewer who claimed to recognize Gonzalez as the officer in the video. Gonzalez had been sidelined earlier that week as investigators worked to verify the footage.
The woman in the video uses the N-word repeatedly and mentions directing the same language at an individual during an arrest. HPD Chief J. Noe Diaz, Jr. was unsparing in his assessment. “The behavior exhibited by Ashley Gonzalez was abhorrent, disgusting, and entirely unacceptable,” he said. “It is deeply disturbing and has no place in law enforcement or in our community.”
Before the termination hearing concluded Friday morning, protesters had already assembled outside HPD headquarters, demanding Gonzalez’s removal from the force. Mayor John Whitmire called her recorded comments “outrageous and reprehensible.”
“Her actions do not reflect the values of our city or the Houston Police Department, nor the standards we expect from those sworn to serve and protect our community,” he said.
Whitmire credited Chief Diaz for his swift response and issued a firm warning to city employees. “There is zero tolerance for racism in my administration, and if you see it, report it immediately,” he said.
The department acknowledged that legal requirements shaped the timeline of the investigation. “In compliance with state civil service laws, an investigation was conducted as fast as legally possible,” officials said.
“I applaud HPD Chief Diaz for suspending Gonzalez when the department became aware of the video and firing her as soon as the state civil service process allowed,” the mayor said.
Whitmire confirmed that the matter would be referred to the Texas Commission on Law Enforcement to pursue the revocation of Gonzalez’s law enforcement license.
