International News: US tightens Cuba sanctions as returning Americans face detentions

By Zoila Palma:  The Trump administration is stepping up pressure on Cuba with new economic sanctions and stricter enforcement of U.S. laws restricting Americans from doing business with Cuban government-owned or affiliated entities.

The latest measures target nine state-owned companies in the mining, metals and construction sectors, as well as senior officials of the Cuban Institute of Friendship with the Peoples (ICAP).

U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused ICAP of supporting what he described as a network aimed at influencing and radicalizing Americans. Rubio said the Trump administration would not allow Cuba to exploit U.S. freedoms to advance what he characterized as the Cuban government’s efforts to promote Marxism and anti-American activity.

The sanctions come amid a broader campaign by the Trump administration to isolate Havana economically and politically, AP reports.

The U.S. has significantly increased pressure on Cuba as the island faces a worsening economic crisis, with fuel shortages contributing to widespread blackouts, reduced public transportation, shortages of medicine and disruptions to working hours and tourism.

Meanwhile, U.S. authorities recently detained several Americans returning from Cuba at Miami International Airport after they participated in events marking the 100th birthday of late Cuban leader Fidel Castro.

Officials said some travelers had their cellphones and other electronic devices seized for inspection. Those detained were eventually released, but authorities warned that they could still face prosecution if investigations determine they violated U.S. sanctions.
