During the red carpet at the film’s recent Los Angeles premiere, Jaafar took a moment to address some of the long-standing rumors that plagued the King of Pop throughout his unprecedented career. For decades, Michael Jackson’s changing appearance was a relentless topic of tabloid speculation and public debate. However, Jaafar says that the upcoming biopic will finally shed light on the medical reality behind his uncle’s changing skin tone, giving audiences a deeper, more empathetic look at what the global superstar was actually going through behind closed doors.
“That’s a big misconception, and this film gives you that understanding of what that is…that vitiligo played a part in his life,” Jaafar explained on the carpet. “And not a lot of people really understand what that is. And he was dealing with that from an early age.”
Vitiligo is a chronic autoimmune disorder that causes patches of skin to lose pigment or color. Michael first publicly addressed his diagnosis during a historic 1993 interview with Oprah Winfrey, explicitly stating that his changing skin tone was not a desire to alter his race, but rather the result of a medical condition he could not control.
Despite his openness, the narrative that he intentionally tried to change his race persisted in the media for years.
By tackling the subject head-on in Michael, Jaafar hopes the film will finally put those harmful rumors to rest and provide a much-needed education on the realities of vitiligo.
