Jason Lee’s BET Deal Could Mark a New Era for Black-Owned Media Power

The launch of BET’s Creator Studio signals a significant shift in digital storytelling, with Jason Lee emerging as a key figure in redefining media ownership and influence.

A New Flagship Series

According to a press release shared with AFROTECH, The Jason Lee Show will serve as the flagship series for BET’s new platform.

The weekly program, available on BET’s digital platforms, promises behind-the-scenes access and conversations exploring the forces shaping culture and influence.

Building Without Gatekeepers

Before partnering with BET, Lee built Hollywood Unlocked into a multi-million-dollar media platform.

His strategy focuses on infrastructure rather than just content—prioritizing ownership, distribution, and long-term value. The platform has become a major Black-owned voice in entertainment media.

Ownership as Strategy

Lee’s partnership with BET reflects his commitment to maintaining control over his work.

“My deal with them is that I own my content. It’s a licensing deal,” Lee explained.

In an industry where creators often exchange ownership for visibility, Lee’s model demonstrates how to scale while retaining control.

Expanding Opportunities for Creators

BET’s Creator Studio aims to provide Black creators with the infrastructure needed to expand across digital, social, and streaming platforms.

“Black creators have always driven culture, now we’re giving them the infrastructure to own it,” said Orchid Richardson, SVP of digital and social at BET.

For Lee, the partnership is about more than personal success.

“Any space that I can continue to open up doors for other creators is a space where I will continue to grow,” he said.

Beyond Media

In addition to his media career, Jason Lee serves as Vice Mayor of Stockton, California.

He has helped secure funding for youth programs and community initiatives, further expanding his influence beyond entertainment.

A Shift Toward Power

“The Jason Lee Show” reflects Lee’s broader strategy of controlling narrative and influence.

“I don’t create chaos by accident. I don’t create conversation by accident,” Lee said.

His career represents a shift from visibility to ownership—highlighting how Black creators can move from participation to power within the media landscape.

As platforms like BET Creator Studio continue to evolve, Lee’s approach offers a blueprint for the future of Black-owned media.
