*The laughs were loud, but the tension was louder. Netflix’s live “Roast of Kevin Hart” delivered one of the most unpredictable nights in recent comedy history, and roastmaster Jeff Ross is pulling back the curtain on how it all came together.
The May 10 event at the Kia Forum in Los Angeles was hosted by Shane Gillis and served as the official follow-up to “The Greatest Roast of All Time: Tom Brady.” Ross, who also took his shots at Hart during the night, spoke with Variety about the behind-the-scenes mechanics that made the evening as volatile as it was entertaining.
Getting Tom Brady back to the roast podium required a carefully placed word. Ross ran into the former NFL star at a Las Vegas party and made his pitch simple. “I whispered, ‘Kevin Hart.’ And his next question was, ‘When?'” Ross recalled. Brady’s set wasted no time going after Hart’s personal life, and Ross said the edge in the room was immediately felt. “Even though it was funny, there was a realness to it,” he told Variety.
Nothing matched the electricity of Katt Williams walking out in a cape. Ross confirmed the appearance grew out of a group brainstorm, driven largely by Hart’s own instinct for great television. “Kevin is a great comic, but he’s also a really smart producer. He loves to follow the discomfort,” Ross said, adding that in his view, Hart and Williams had no contact with each other before the live broadcast. “I don’t believe they actually talked until he came out on television.”
Hart addressed Williams directly in front of the live audience. “Me and this man have been at odds for years on years. You coming out here, quite the f*cking surprise. But, Katt, I can sit and I can watch you, I can laugh, because I’m a f*cking fan first, okay?” Hart said. He then extended an invitation for a permanent truce. “Katt, we have an opportunity in real time, this is live television, to put our f*cking beef behind us. I am offering you an olive branch of peace. I want to be a brother, I want to be a friend. Katt, I want to move on. Can we move on, man?”
Williams accepted the gesture, meeting Hart at center stage before taking the microphone and immediately going on the attack. He went after Hart’s connection to Diddy’s events, telling the crowd, “Just because Kevin went to Diddy parties does not mean he did something wrong. The fact that he gets all quiet when you bring it up, that means he did something wrong.” Williams also made clear he had not come in peace, describing himself as one of Hart’s enemies and saying the invitation had caught him completely off guard.
The reconciliation, as it turned out, was seemingly never real. Hart pulled back the curtain himself before the night was over. “Everybody has said tonight that I can’t act. What I want you to do is go back and look at that moment where I shook Katt’s hand, and I looked him in the eye, and I said, ‘I just want us to be friends.’ Some of the best f*cking acting that I’ve ever did in my career. I did not mean one word of what I said. F*ck Katt Williams!”
Ross summed up the Williams moment simply: “He came out like a villain, and he left like a friend.” Whether Hart would agree with that last part remains an open question.
