KCCA edge Kitara to go second

KCCA moved second on the Uganda Premier League table after overcoming Kitara in a pulsating game played at MTN-Omondi Stadium on Friday.

Midfielder Joel Sserunjogi scored the lone goal of the game, coming at the stroke of halftime.

KCCA came into Friday’s game on the back of a 1-0 loss to SC Villa and needed a reponse to revive their hopes in the title race.

Kitara who drew away to Vipers in their last outing were equally in search of victory to close in on the leaders.

Vipers’ draw against Villa on Wednesday meant, the gap between them and Kitara was five points and victory on Friday would have narrowed it to just two.

However, it was KCCA who showed hunger and desire right from the start.

Brain Jjara had the first attempt at goal in the seventh minute but Kitara’s Isa Lumu was well stationed to block the effort.

Minutes later, Lazaro Muhindo who was facing his former team made a daunting run into the box and put in a ground cross but Saidi Mayanja arrived a fraction late.

On the other end, Kitara troubled KCCA’s back line especially during set pieces and Living Kabon nearly scored direct from a corner kick but Sammy Ssebaduka was well positioned to head away a goal-bound effort.

The decisive moment of the game came in the 44th minute when Mayanja teed up Sserunjogi whose low drive outside the box went into the bottom right corner.

Kitara reacted by making changes after the break, introducing Edson Agondeze, Emmanuel Wasswa, Patrick Kaddu, Muhammad Shaban and Chrispus Asiki.

Despite stepping up efforts, KCCA defended resiliently to claim all three points and move to second place on 48 points, four behind leaders Vipers.

KCCA will return to action on Tuesday away to Entebbe UPPC while Kitara will be at home to Calvary.
