The Confederation of African Football (CAF) and the governments of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania have taken a major step toward staging a successful 2027 Africa Cup of Nations after holding a high-level ministerial kick-off meeting in Kampala, Uganda.

The gathering brought together CAF officials, sports ministers from the three host nations, presidents of their respective football associations, and chairpersons of the Local Organising Committees.

The meeting focused on strengthening collaboration and reviewing preparations for the tournament, which will be hosted under the banner of PAMOJA — a symbol of unity and partnership among the East African neighbours.

CAF Acting General Secretary praised the progress made so far by the three countries and reaffirmed the continent’s football governing body’s full support for the project.

He stressed the need for proper coordination, timely execution of plans, disciplined delivery, and a united regional strategy to ensure the competition meets global standards.

Representatives of Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania also expressed gratitude to CAF President Patrice Motsepe and the CAF leadership for their technical guidance, trust, and continued backing.

They pledged to work closely with CAF to make the tournament one of the most memorable editions in AFCON history.

A key part of the meeting involved a detailed review of preparations across several sectors, including stadium infrastructure, hospitality, safety, media operations, fan movement, governance, and finance.

Each nation gave updates on the construction and renovation of stadiums, training facilities, airports, transport systems, hotels, and other supporting infrastructure.

The three governments committed to ensuring that all venues and facilities meet CAF requirements within the agreed deadlines, with August 2026 set as a major milestone for readiness assessment.

On hospitality and tourism, the host nations agreed to market East Africa as a welcoming destination capable of delivering an exceptional tournament experience for supporters, teams, and visitors.

Plans were discussed around hotel readiness, tourism services, medical support, transport systems, and security coordination.

Leaders at the meeting also highlighted the tournament’s potential to boost tourism, attract investment, promote trade, and stimulate regional economic growth beyond football.

To ensure smooth administration, officials approved a governance framework for the PAMOJA Local Organising Committee.

The structure will include representatives from CAF, sports ministers of the host nations, football federation presidents, and LOC chairpersons to guarantee accountability and efficient decision-making.

Another major issue discussed was cross-border travel.

The ministers agreed to continue consultations on launching a PAMOJA Visa Framework, designed to make movement easier for fans, players, officials, media, sponsors, and investors during the tournament.

The proposed system is expected to include visa exemptions, faster immigration clearance, simplified customs procedures, and harmonised travel rules across Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania.

The three nations also resolved to hold regular technical and ministerial meetings, supported by progress reports, to track delivery timelines and quickly address emerging challenges.

With preparations gathering momentum, Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania remain determined to deliver a landmark AFCON in 2027 — one expected to showcase African unity, regional ambition, and the growing power of football on the continent.
