Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige isn’t shying away from one of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s biggest hurdles in recent years. During an appearance on Josh Horowitz‘s Happy Sad Confused podcast, Feige addressed the long-troubled Blade reboot starring two-time Oscar winner Mahershala Ali.
When asked how much time he’s spent “in therapy” discussing the delayed vampire hunter film, Feige was honest.
“I am feeling very excited that we got Wesley [Snipes] back for a time in Deadpool & Wolverine, and like a gigantic loser and failure that we didn’t get off the ground with Mahershala,” Feige admitted during the interview.
The admissions come after years of production setbacks for the project. First announced during Marvel’s San Diego Comic-Con panel in July 2019, the Blade reboot immediately became one of the MCU’s most anticipated titles.
However, the film went through a revolving door of directors, including Bassam Tariq and Yann Demange, alongside multiple script rewrites from a rotating slate of screenwriters.
After being pushed back across multiple release calendars, Marvel ultimately pulled Blade from its official slate in late 2024 to reevaluate the creative direction rather than rushing a subpar script into production.
While Snipes’ surprise reprise as the Daywalker in Deadpool & Wolverine provided fans with a nostalgic high note, Feige says failing to deliver Ali’s standalone feature remains a major personal disappointment.
Beyond the status of Blade, Feige also dropped several updates regarding the future roadmap of the Multiverse Saga. He shut down rumors that Avengers: Secret Wars might be divided into two separate films, confirming succinctly that it is “not in this world” while reassuring fans that Avengers: Doomsday remains firmly on track to hit its planned release date.
When asked if the MCU will undergo a full hard reboot following Secret Wars, Feige gave a clear “no,” though he shared that Jonathan Hickman’s iconic 2015 comic run serves as a “nice roadmap” for where the franchise is heading next.
Finally, when pressed on whether any actors have officially signed on for the MCU’s X-Men reboot, the studio chief remained characteristically coy, giving a simple “not necessarily.”
